Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Chronograph GMT Watch
Audemars Piguet has once again demonstrated its commitment to innovation with the introduction of the Royal Oak Concept Split-Seconds Chronograph GMT Large Date. This timepiece is notable for its use of Chroma Forged Technology (CFT) Carbon, a material developed over five years. Unlike traditional forged carbon, where color is added via resin, CFT Carbon colors the carbon fibers themselves, resulting in a distinctive pattern of luminous blue and black.
Historically, the coloration in carbon composite materials has been achieved through the resin used to bond the carbon fibers, which would retain their natural color if the resin were absent. However, AP has shifted this paradigm with their introduction of CFT Carbon, or Chroma Forged Technology Carbon. This new technique involves directly applying pigment to the carbon fibers before they are set into the mold, allowing for unprecedented control over the coloration and patterning in the final product.
It took AP five years to perfect this patented process, marking their return to using forged carbon after an eight-year hiatus. The result is visible in the 43mm case of the Royal Oak Concept Split-Seconds Chronograph GMT Large Date, which features a mesmerizing pattern of black and luminous blue sections. Unlike traditional forged carbon’s random patterning, AP’s method allows for a more controlled yet still unique arrangement of the colored fibers, making each watch subtly distinct.
