It was only a matter of time before a car brand got the electric car ‘right’. While not perfect, Tesla’s near perfect Model S became the best selling large luxury car in the US in 2015. Luxury car brands are expected to embrace the latest technology and now that Tesla has set the bar with non-gas performance and luxury, other brands are following suit with alternative engine flagship vehicles.
While many brands have embraced hybrid and all electric power trains, some brands are betting on hydrogen fuel cells as the wave of the future. Toyota unveiled its top end Mirai sedan complete with hydrogen fuel system and is staking its resources in the hydrogen infrastructure. Interesting to note that the their Prius model was one of the first mainstream cars to have a hybrid drive. Lexus, Toytoa’s luxury sub brand has suggested a hydrogen powered high performance luxury car by 2020. Ultimately, consumers will decide which fuel source goes mainstream they take into account what limitations they can live with day to day.
