Rivian dropped its first two models at the 2019 LA Auto Show with specs that put other EV makers on notice. The R1T electric truck and R1S SUV boast styling, tech, and performance numbers that rival anything either on the market or in development, with the R1S set for a 2021 release. Built on the same skateboard chassis as the R1T truck, the R1S has similar figures from its four-motor, 750 horsepower electric drivetrain – a supercar-like 0-60 time of three seconds and an estimated 400 miles on a full battery charge.
Rivian’s modular tech system allows for upgrades of all components along with over-the-air software updates and level three autonomous operation. Unlike the R1T truck, the Rivial luxury SUV seats seven passengers in what looks to be a top-notch interior. Like the R1T, the R1S is available for preorder with a $1,000 deposit.
