History

The swimsuit started out as a gown-like garment in the 18th century, but quickly evolved into something much chicer. By the 20th century, women?s swimwear became much more popular and stylish and designers such as Emanuel Ungaro, André Courr?ges, Giorgio Armani, Oscar de la Renta and Calvin Klein quickly emerged on the scene, creating the timeless style of swimsuit we still see today. The bikini was born in 1946, when designer Louis Réard controversially removed fabric from the classic one-piece and turned it into a two-piece. Whilst the bikini increased in popularity, the classic black one-piece became a summer wardrobe staple, and it remained more popular due to its practicality and elegant, flattering style.
