Maserati may launch an electric vehicle by 2020
During the course of a recent interview with Car and Driver, Italian carmaker Maserati?s Engineering Chief Roberto Fedeli said that the company — a Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) unit which manufactures high-end luxury sports cars — plans to roll out an electric vehicle (EV) by 2020.
Fedeli ? the mastermind behind the creation of some of Ferrari?s best modern vehicles ? said in the interview that he has received orders from FCA chief Segio Marchionne to bring a Maserati EV to the market at the earliest possible.
Fedeli said that Maserati may unveil its EV in 2019, and the production of the vehicle will likely commence in 2020.
The disclosure by Fedeli implies that Maserati has efforts underway to foray into the EV market. But, the company apparently would not follow the footsteps of other EV automakers that already offer EVs or plan to do so by the same time as Maserati. With some of the other bigwig luxury car manufactures, like BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Lexus, Jaguar, and Volvo, planning to have their EVs on the market by 2020, Fedeli ? asserting that the Maserati EV will not be a Tesla copycat ? said: ?We will be last (with a production EV), and we have to arrive to the market with something different. Very different.?
