McLaren 570GT revealed: McLaren’s luxury car
It might be closely related to the track-focused 570S, but the new 570GT is McLaren’s most relaxing and practical car yet
The McLaren 570GT has a side-hinged rear window that conceals a practical boot
Just three major panel changes on the new £154,000 McLaren 570GT distinguish it from its £143,250 570S sister, but what a change has been wrought. This new GT version of the Woking-built supercar is far more attractive and far less fussy looking than the 570S on which it’s based.
McLaren’s design team have reworked the roof, rear wings and rear deck, and this transforms the practicality as well as the looks. Under the new side-hinged glass hatch, there’s now 220 litres of luggage space to add to the 150 litres under the bonnet. “That’s more than a Ford Focus has,” says Andy Palmer, vehicle line director of the McLaren Sports Series (which includes both the 570S and the 570GT). He should know, because in another life Palmer was a senior engineer for Ford working on the Focus.
True, it’s arguable whether anyone actually does a Grand Tour these days, given traffic, time constraints and cheap air travel, but putting the letters GT on a boot lid still convey a frisson of excitement.
From the front, the 570GT is hard to distinguish from its 570S sister
The blurb says that side loading is now possible, although you have to tug your bags high over the vulnerable rear wings to get them in.
More positively, the hinge...
