Omega Speedmaster ‘Silver Snoopy Award’ 50th Anniversary
Omega announced a new Speedmaster model that reinforces the link between the Swiss watch brand, NASA and the famous beagle featured in the comic strip Peanuts. The special connection between Snoopy and NASA first started in the 1960s, when Charles M. Schulz began creating comic strips depicting the famous dog character on the moon. Exactly 50 years later, a special timepiece has been created in the occasion’s honour, the Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary.
The world famous beagle plays a prominent role within the timepiece, first appearing as an embossed silver medallion on the blue subdial at 9 o’clock reproducing the silver pin that NASA astronauts give to award recipients. The dial itself is also silver and laser-engraved with Ag925. It includes two more blue subdials, as well as blue PVD angle-shaped hour markers and hands.
On the caseback, Snoopy goes into orbit on his black and white Command and Service Module (CSM) placed on a sweeping hand that activates when the chronograph seconds hand is in use. This way, Snoopy takes a trip around themoon whose surface is decorated on the sapphire crystal using a unique micro-structured metallisation. In the distance, the Earth disc rotates once per minute, in sync with the watch’s small seconds hand. The quote ?Eyes on the Stars? follows Snoopy in his trip.
