Alia Ahmed’s “Thoughts to Image” colourful paintings in London
The current exhibition at Lucca Hue-Williams gallery “Albion Jeune” are paintings from saudi-arbian artist Alia Ahmad
Alia Ahmed Alia is a 27-year-old Saudi Arabian painter who uses a very broad color palette that is influenced by an upbringing in Riyadh?s industrial/desert landscape. The exhibition “Thought to Images” is being shown at the Albion jeune art gallery in the heart of London
What is fascinating about Ahmad?s work is its simultaneous ode to the vast deserts of Saudi Arabia and its bustling metropolises. Of course, these concepts co-exist in her home of Riyadh, but to be able to capture this rather dissonant topography, is truly striking. Perhaps because, as indicated by Ahmad?s expansive and illusive use of colour, the rich historical culture of cities as such as Riyadh, but also Saudi as a whole, is lost in the constant development, modernisation and capitalisation that occurs; it is snatched from its intricate, colourful origins. Alia Ahmed aims to investigate the balance between natural elements, such as light and plants, by painting them even more explicitly.
Ahmad presents this intricacy in various ways. In Alwasm, Oil on canvas, she combines this intricacy with the vastness of what looks to be a depiction of the city. Long, dark, spindling structures, which look be trees (it is unclear) protrude from below into the sky; their towering nature is evocative of the skyscrapers which dominate the landscape.
