Nestled in the scenic locale of Mudgee, NSW, Kavillo Studios emerges as a distinctive venture in luxury tourism accommodations. Conceived and constructed by Michael Ferris, a sculptor with a growing reputation, these studios blend artistic design with environmental sensitivity, epitomizing a modern approach to rural aesthetics.
The architectural essence of Kavillo Studios is inspired by the traditional concept of camping but executed with a luxurious twist. The structure features a unique roof that mimics a tent-like canopy, draping elegantly over the space beneath. This folded roof not only adds a dynamic element of tension but also interacts seamlessly with the natural environment, connecting to a sturdy rammed earth plinth at the southwest corner.
Privacy and openness are balanced skillfully throughout the design. A robust western wall made of rammed earth provides seclusion, shielding the interiors from adjacent buildings. Simultaneously, the strategic placement of the folding roof ensures privacy while allowing the northern winter sun to illuminate the interiors through a glazed door.
The choice of materials reflects a deep respect for the studio’s rural setting. Galvanized sheet metal used in cladding and roofing pays homage to the nearby shearing sheds, while the ramed earth elements nod to the prevalent Pisé buildings in the area.
